How To Keep Garments From Sagging

It must hurt you badly when you see your clothing line sagging and you can’t do anything about it. This is not always impossible to fix your sagging clothes or to avoid a few mistakes that can make your fabric saggy and stretchy. Even at the time of working with the best basic sewing machine, you need to take a few precautions to prolong the life of the fabric.

How To Keep Garments From Sagging Using a Basic Sewing Machine

In this article, we are going to tell you about some of the ways through which you can fix the sagging clothes as well as prevent the sagging of the rest of the clothing line.

1 - Care Label:

The biggest mistake people usually do which makes their fabric sagging is not to follow the instructions mentioned at the back of the fabric. If the care label is saying to wash the fabric with cold water but you are using hot water then this thing can make fiber of the fabric weak and you can see sagging. The first line of defense, the manufacturer is providing you is the labeling at the back of the fabric.

If you will follow the steps from pre-washing to the post-washing, your fabric life will be enhanced. Make sure that you are not stretching or handling the garment roughly as it can make the fiber of the garment rough too.

2 - Laundry Screen:

Another major reason why clothes can be saggy soon after sewing is due to the drying technique. Usually, people wash garments and then put them on some rope that can leave crushing marks on the fabric as well as make them saggy. If you are working with delicate fabrics then it’s not a problem to hang them on a rope but when it comes to heavier clothes then it’s risky.

Due to the weight of the water, rope put pressure on the fabric and they start moving towards the downside. Avoid rope when you are working with the velvet or some furry fabric. I usually avoid rope for any kind of fabric. Use laundry screen and lay your fabric on it flatly. Laundry screen will keep the fiber of the fabric flat and you don’t have to go through the sagging or stretching problem.

3 - Garment Conditioner:

Whenever you are washing the fabric in the spinner, you can never predict the results. It may happen that in the end spinner may stretch your fabric a lot and they will be out of the shape before you know it. The whole drying and washing process of the garment is quite tiring for the people who can’t deal with the problem anymore.

You can use fabric conditioner to get rid of this problem. Fabric conditioner can help you in maintaining the shape of the garment for a long time. After wash, you can put conditioner in the water and dip your fabric into it. Dry it out on the laundry screen later and you can see how big difference you will be able to witness after using it.

4 - For Hanger:

When you are about to hang garments in the wardrobe, another mistake that can make garment saggy is not to use the right hanger. Whenever you work on the best rated sewing machines for beginners   you always look for the right tools that can simplify the work. In the same way, whenever you are hanging garment in your closet, you must have the right hanger for the dress.

Use the right hangers for your clothes

If the dress is small and you are using the big hanger for that, then you can see disturb the neckline will be ane after some time it will be all saggy. You can also use a few safety pins to fit the shirt on the hanger and in this way fabric will not be hung out of the hanger. Never force the hanger to go through the neckline as it can tear some stitches out.

5 - Button Up:

If you are hanging your shirts in a rough manner in the closet then definitely things are going to be difficult for you. If your garment has any kind of closure no matter if there are buttons, snaps, zippers or anything else, always keep them close at the time of hanging. If you will hang the garments unbutton for a long time then after a few months you can see the changing in shape of the clothes.

6 - Ironing:

Ironing can make your fabric too smooth and crispy from the edges but it can also damage fiber of the fabric if you are using a too hot iron. At the time of ironing the fabric, always check instructions whether the fabric is capable of handling this much heat or not. If you are using excessive heat on the garment, it will soon be faded in color and weak in strength.

I prefer to use a press cloth when it comes to ironing. Press cloth can save your garment from the excessive heat or you can also use thick tissue sheet in between the iron plate and garment surface. Use iron at a moderate temperature to save your fabric.

7 - Weights:

If you are stretching fabric too much at the time of cutting or working at the sewing machine then the shape can be changed. While cutting fabric, put as less pressure as you can to maintain the quality of the fabric. Use a paperweight or fabric clips if you want to keep the different parts together without stretching or pulling them.

You can also use pins for keeping all the parts together but in some of the fabrics, pins can leave the marks so you have to be careful in terms of handling fabric.

Conclusion

When you are working on some fabric, the best thing you can do is to observe the fabric and then work accordingly. Always prefer quality over anything, the more you are going to sew neatly, the more your skills will be polished.
